Hiking Therapy

503270140Find your peace in nature.

You feel a sense of calm when you spend time outside, whether camping, kayaking, or around trees and water.

The tension in your limbs, neck, and back loosens.

The busy thoughts in your mind slow to a crawl. Your emotions become more grounded and centered.

These changes in your thinking and physicality are the power of nature therapy, also known as ecotherapy.

The local sounds outside include cicadas, wind, birds, and the lapping of waves. The scents include salt water, pluff mud, and pine trees. The local sights include water blues, tree greens, sky pinks, and oranges.

Touch the fur textures of dogs, goats, and horses or the slippery skin of frogs and lizards. Getting in sync with your environment through your senses brings you here and now.

You prefer movement to being still.

Traditionally, therapy is a process where you sit and talk, looking at the person across from you in a building. This type of therapy can have a lot of benefits, but you prefer to be on the move. Walking and talking – or simply sitting somewhere outside – feel better to you regardless of anxiety, ADHD, or other reasons.

Indoors have always felt more stagnant and constricting to you. The outdoors gives you a sense of adventure, connection, and freedom. Not only are you getting the support of a therapist, but nature is your co-therapist.

You notice a deep connection to the plants and animals in your life. Whether it is a fur baby, pothos and monsteras, or tinkering around in the garden, you feel a connection you don’t have with people or inside a building.

Getting your hands dirty, feeling the textures of an animal, or the rush of a walk through the woods – something just feels different.

An alternative worth exploring…
